Move To Dubai, Pay No Tax? Why Australian Business Owners Are Looking At Dubai
Move to Dubai. Pay no tax.
That is the proposition attracting Australian business owners. And I understand why.
Dubai offers an attractive business environment, international banking, a lifestyle that appeals to successful entrepreneurs and their families, and the possibility of operating within a very different tax environment.
But there is a question that does not get nearly enough attention: does moving to Dubai actually change your Australian tax position?
Dubai may be an excellent jurisdiction. But the real question is not simply, “How do I set up a company in Dubai?” It is, “Does Dubai actually make sense for the international future I’m trying to create?”
And that is a very different conversation.
Does Moving To Dubai Remove Your Australian Tax Considerations?
Not necessarily. This is the part I think Australian business owners need to understand: you can move to Dubai and still have significant Australian tax considerations.
You might have an Australian company, Australian property, existing trusts, investments, or a business that continues to be managed or operated from Australia. Simply establishing a company in Dubai does not make those considerations disappear.
Your personal tax residency matters. Your company’s tax residency matters. Where management and control actually occur matters. And the relationship between your Australian and international position matters.
This is why, at Wealth Safe, we do not start with the Dubai company. We start with the facts: your Australian starting position, your business, your family, your wealth and what you are actually trying to create.
Because the strategy has to account for the complete position, not just the attractive part overseas.
Does A Dubai Company Change Your Australian Tax Position?
Not automatically. Establishing a Dubai company and changing your Australian tax residency are two very different things, and confusing the two can become a very expensive mistake.
I worked with a husband and wife, Robert and Maria. They had built a successful business. They owned Australian property and had investments, and their business was already generating revenue internationally, in the United States, Canada and Europe.
So naturally, Dubai was attractive. But Robert and Maria did not need me to tell them that. They already knew it. They were interested in the tax environment, but they also wanted a different lifestyle, greater international freedom and an environment where they could continue growing their business while raising their family.
What they needed was to understand whether the future they wanted could actually be supported by the international position they were considering. What would happen to their Australian business? What would remain in Australia? Where would they actually live? Where would the business operate? And what role should Dubai perform?
Because a Dubai company is not an international strategy. It is a structure that may form part of one.
Is Dubai Really Tax-Free? How UAE Tax Actually Works?
Not entirely.
Dubai operates within the United Arab Emirates, which has no general personal income tax. But the UAE also has a corporate tax regime, with a general rate of 9% on taxable income above the applicable threshold.
Certain qualifying Free Zone businesses may benefit from a zero-percent corporate tax rate on qualifying income, subject to specific conditions. But that does not mean every Dubai company pays zero tax.
The actual tax treatment depends on the business, its activities, the nature of its income, where and how it operates, and whether it satisfies the relevant requirements.
So the question is not simply, “Can I get zero-percent tax?” The more important question is, “Does this business genuinely belong in Dubai, and how does that fit within my complete international position?”
There is nothing wrong with wanting a more tax-efficient position. But an attractive tax rate does not automatically make the entire strategy work. One attractive tax feature does not determine the strategy. The complete position does.
Does Dubai Actually Suit Your Business And Your Family?
For the right Australian business owner, Dubai can be an exceptionally attractive option. Particularly:
- someone who genuinely wants to relocate;
- someone building an internationally focused business;
- someone whose commercial activities and longer-term objectives can be supported by a UAE presence; or
- someone looking to establish a new international base for themselves and their family.
This is where Robert and Maria’s situation becomes important. Their interest in Dubai was not simply about a lower tax rate. They were trying to create a different future. Their business was already international. They wanted to live internationally. And they wanted their business, residency, investments, and lifestyle to work together. That is what we were designing for.
As Chief Strategist, my role is to understand that future and design the architecture capable of supporting it. Because the objective is not to make you fit Dubai. It is to determine whether Dubai fits what you are actually trying to create.
So, do I think Dubai can be an excellent jurisdiction? Absolutely. For the right person, it can be exceptionally strong, commercially, personally and potentially from a taxation perspective.
But I would challenge anyone considering Dubai to ask a more important question: if Dubai offers the tax advantages you are looking for, does the rest of your international position actually support that decision?
- Would you want to live there?
- Does it support your business?
- Does it suit your family?
- What happens to your Australian position?
- And does Dubai belong within the broader international architecture you are trying to create?
Conclusion
Dubai can offer great opportunities. For the right Australian business owner, it can be exceptionally strong, commercially, personally and potentially from a taxation perspective.
But moving to Dubai does not remove your Australian tax considerations, a Dubai company is not the same as changing your Australian tax residency, and not every Dubai company pays zero tax.
So the question is not simply whether Dubai is attractive. The question is whether Dubai is right for the future you are actually trying to create.
The country is not the strategy.
